Dutch Designer Maarten Baas
I was flicking through my daughter’s school design book, Basic Product Design: Material Thought, the other day and happened upon Dutch designer Maarten Baas‘ stuff. His cutely named ‘Hey, chair, be a bookshelf’ popped out at me.
Saving old furniture from the scrap heap, he turns them into these weird and wonderful and totally one-off pieces. Functional sculptures could be a good name. I kinda like them.
He also makes quirky, wonky furniture that looks like it’s come from a Dr Seuss book. They have a metal structure inside for support and are modelled by hand from synthetic clay.
Some people are just so darned original!
