Bucket List: Christmas Sledding

Reindeer sledging in Finnmark, Norway

I love having a bucket list. You can pretty much do whatever you want on a bucket list. You can be crazy, hedonistic, adrenaline-seeking, wildly adventurous.

Dreaming of all the things you’d like to do, wish you could do, imagine you might be able to do is pretty easy from the comfort of your sofa, of course. Somethings may just never happen. Take my desire to go on a balloon ride, for instance: It’s a bit of a joke as I have an irrational fear of heights!

There is one thing, however, I am determined to do one day: Go sledding in the snow with either reindeer or dogs. Or both. In different countries. Scooting through snow-dusted fir forests behind a pack of beautiful animals has captured my imagination for a long time but I’ve yet to actually do it.

The other day I read about the Cairngorm Sled-dog Centre in Aviemore, Scotland, which offers three-hour sled-dog safaris that take adventurous travellers into Cairngorms National Park led by a team of 12 sled-dogs. Sounds like pure fun!

Or you can go even colder and head to Norway and let reindeer take you away. In Finnmark, northern Norway – where you can also go to see the Northern Lights – you can experience sledging Sami-style. And if you’re really adventurous, you can even do it on skis! Love it!

What’s on your bucket list?
