Interview: Hamimi Design | Celebrating Moroccan Artisans

Working as a business duo on opposite sides of the world has not deterred brother and sister designers and founders of Moroccan boutique brand Hamimi Design. In fact, it has brought them closer together, says Alex of their unique working arrangement. With Alex living in Brisbane, Australia and Rebecca in Marrakech, they have a designed a business around each other’s strengths, love of Morocco and the desire to produce quality products – jewellery, bags, lighting – using talented local craftspeople. Tell us about yourselves and about the Hamimi brand Rebecca:- I have called Marrakech home for the past decade after travelling there on a whim and falling in love with the city. I later fell in love with my husband Larbi Cherkaoui who is a well-established Moroccan artist (www.larbicherkaoui.com). I am also a painter, having studied fine art in Australia. Interview: Monica J | Crocheted Lace Stones

Once the preserve of doilies, baby booties and blankets, the craft of crochet is having a revival. Maker-creator Monica Johnson is giving crocheted lace its time in the sun. Or more specifically, it’s time in the stone age. For Monica encases stones in intricate crocheted covers, fusing nature with finely crafted lace, and turns them into works of art and jewellery. It seems there is nothing she can’t crochet. Please introduce yourself – tell us a bit about your background and how you’ve ended up where you are today. My name is Monica Johnson and I am an artist with a deep love for creating one-of-a-kind works of art. I mostly create crocheted lace stones, crocheted lace stone necklaces, dream catcher necklaces and jewellery with a bohemian vibe. I also love to create handmade beads, draw, paint and sew. I have had an Etsy shop since 2007 – monicaj.etsy.com.
